LÍRA PONT started as a book store on the freshly renovated Hunyadi tér (VI. district, Budapest) next to the Market Hall - the last authentic one downtown -. Now this little pavillon like building is a cozy café.
KŐLEVES - although in the same area, the Jewish Quarter, it's former incarnation was originally on the corner of Dob utca and Kazinczy utca replacing KisKacsa (which moved to Király utca - Kazinczy utca corner, but closed soon after to become a Chinese restaurant for a while). Kőleves later relocated to this new loacation (illustration) giving space to Macesz Huszár and gaining access to a huge garden with another open air pub nextdoor. Lots of bicycles in the garden at the gates inside usually... unfortunately not enough space to lock yours if you happen to arrive later in the afternoon.
Waffenrad in front of MAMŰ Galéria Budapest, 1071 Budapest, Damjanich u. 39.!
A bit secluded, this run by Transylvanian Hungarians gallery is presenting a great variety of installations, video-art, intermedia and paintings alike. You might end up in a performance if entering the basement during occasional exhibition openings.
Bicycles inside MÜSZI - short for Művelődési Szint - (shut down recently), former ART & CULTURE CENTER in Budapest downtown... it was a safe haven for the alternative and marginal.
After the green gates a 3 floor staircase had to be climbed. Like entering a castle.
Downstairs it was full of bicycles attached via hanging or to the railing.
All sorts of bicycles lined up, chained to poles, resting next to the Market Hall of Nyolcker (officially called Józsefváros after Wien's Josefstadt), the VIII. district of Budapest near the körút / ring / circuit!
Bicycles in front of Pizzica (1065 Budapest, Nagymező u. 21.) are common. This Pizza place - one of the first to popularize fine slice dining - is run by brother Enrico and Paolo from Lecce (southern Apulia region), Italy. They have contemporary art exhibitions in the restaurant on monthly basis.
KLUB VITTULA
1073 Budapest, Kertész u. 4.- bicycles found in front to of or duing performance nights at the underground venue_two examples (2008-2020):
8TREND (a bad word play on ÉTREND = MENU in Hungarian) written on the basement window, up above the door it already sais MONKEY 21. Typical for Budapest. To take off the previous venue's signo / logo would cost money, right? More important, this venue seems to be the location of Nothin' but the Blues (1088 Budapest, Krúdy Gyula u. 6.), one of the best blues pubs with fresh pottage and other traditional dishes (Csülkös Sztrapacska) back in 2002-2010, still around after some renovations - thinking tourists want sterile western style venues (big mistake!, locals want it)...
Bicycle at CSÓNAKHÁZ in 2012, basically THE pub at Sziget Fesztivál (Budapest), where usually locals hang out since for them only here beers are affordable (less and less?)... the pub is private property, not part of the festival. The name "Csónakház" refers to the times when - as much as on Római part (Roman shores) nearby - there used to boat houses all over. HQs and storage space for sports groups. Boat houses were / are run by associations and families 1960/1970-2010.
Bicycle on the courtyard of former - first - artistic expat studio building at opening party (around 2011-2012)! The institution became a bit luxurious serving the rich and fancy instead as in the begining... Brody House
